Palestinian resolution defeated in UN Security Council vote

Palestinian resolution defeated in UN Security Council vote
UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council failed Tuesday to adopt a resolution on Palestinian statehood that was strongly opposed by the United States.

China, France and Russia were among the eight countries that voted in favor of the text, but the resolution fell short of winning the nine "yes" votes necessary for adoption in the 15-member council.

Australia and the United States voted against, and five other countries abstained, including Britain.

The resolution drafted by the Palestinians and backed by Arab countries would have paved the way to a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

It set a 12-month deadline for Israel to reach a final peace deal with the Palestinians and called for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian territories by the end of 2017.
Security Council member Jordan had requested the vote on the measure despite opposition from the United States, which argued that the resolution did not address Israel´s security concerns.

"This resolution sets the stage for more division, not for compromise," said US Ambassador Samantha Power.

"This text addresses the concerns of just one side." US Secretary of State John Kerry had lobbied in the days leading up to the vote, calling 13 foreign ministers to explain US opposition.

Washington was not, however, compelled to resort to its veto power to block the measure -- a move that could have undermined US standing in the Arab world.

A US veto risked angering key Arab allies, including partners in the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

Argentina, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Luxembourg joined France, China and Russia in supporting the resolution. Lithuania, Nigeria, South Korea, Rwanda abstained, along with Britain.

How to Tackle anxiety

How to Tackle anxiety

 Ways to Deal With Anxiety

Everyone has feelings of anxiety, nervousness, tension, and stress from time to time. Here are 5 ways to help manage them:
  1. Become a relaxation expert.  What the body really needs is a relaxation technique — like deep breathing, tai chi, or yoga — that has a physical effect on the mind.
  2. Get enough sleep, nourishment, and exercise.  Get the right amount of sleep for your needs — not too much or too little. Eat well: Choose fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains for long-term energy (instead of the short bursts that come from too much sugar or caffeine). And exercise to send oxygen to every cell in the body so your brain and body can operate at their best.
  3. Connect with others. Spend time with friends or family. Organized activities are great, but just hanging out works too. Doing things with those we feel close to deepens our bonds, allowing us to feel supported and secure.  You'll be reminded that everyone has these feelings sometimes. You're not alone.
  4. Connect with nature.  Walking, hiking, trail biking, or snowshoeing offer the additional benefit of exercise. Invite a friend or two — or a family member — along and enjoy feeling connected to people as well.
  5. Think positive. A great way to keep our minds off the worry track is to focus our thoughts on things that are good, beautiful, and positive. Allow yourself to dream, wish, and imagine the best that could happen.

World News :: NATO ends its Afghan war, but insurgency on the rise
KABUL: NATO will hold a ceremony in Kabul later Sunday formally ending its war in Afghanistan, officials said, after 13 years of conflict that have left the country in the grip of worsening insurgent violence.

The event was arranged in secret due to the threat of Taliban strikes in the Afghan capital, which has been hit by repeated suicide bombings and gun attacks over recent years.

On January 1, the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat mission, which has suffered 3,485 military deaths since 2001, will be replaced by a NATO "training and support" mission.
About 12,500 foreign troops staying in Afghanistan will not be involved in direct fighting, but will assist the Afghan army and police in the battle against the Taliban, who ruled from 1996 until 2001.

New Russian military doctrine labels NATO as main threat

New Russian military doctrine labels NATO as main threat
MOSCOW: The Kremlin on Friday branded the expansion of NATO as a fundamental threat to Russia in a revised military doctrine that dramatically reflects deteriorating relations with the West.

The new document, approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin, decries the "reinforcement of NATO´s offensive capacities directly on Russia´s borders, and measures taken to deploy a global anti-missile defence system" in Central Europe.

NATO was already seen a major threat in an earlier version of the doctrine published in 2010, but the war in Ukraine has further raised tensions to levels not seen since the Cold War.

Latest Sports News :New Zealand in firm control of first Sri Lanka Test
CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand eyed an early finish to the first Test Sunday as they reduced Sri Lanka to 131 for two at lunch on the third day in Christchurch.

Sri Lanka, with Dimuth Karunaratne on 77 and Lahiru Thirimanne on 14, require a further 172 runs to make New Zealand bat again after being forced to follow on 303 runs in arrears on the first innings.

They began the day on 84 without loss but were soon in trouble in cool, heavily overcast conditions.

New Zealand quick Tim Southee had success in the first over of the morning when Kaushal Silva was caught behind by BJ Watling without adding to his overnight 33.

Southee´s strike partner Trent Boult then claimed Kumar Sangakkara cheaply for the second time in the match.

Jackie Chan says feels ashamed of son’s drug abuse, it is a ridiculous
BEIJING: Hong Kong kung fu movie star Jackie Chan feels ashamed of his son’s drug abuse and hopes that one day he will speak out about the dangers of taking drugs, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Jaycee Chan was formally charged with a drugs offence this week, meaning he is almost certain to face trial.

The younger Chan, a 32-year-old actor and singer, was arrested in Beijing this year after testing positive for marijuana, with police saying they found 100 grams of the drug at his home.

"I hope that in the future, he could become an anti-drug spokesman and tell his experiences to young people," Jackie Chan told Xinhua, in comments released late on Wednesday.

Chan also said that he never used any of his connections to help his son out, the report added.

Syrian Air Strikes (World News)

BEIRUT: Syrian regime air strikes killed at least 52 civilians, including seven children, in strongholds of the Islamic State group, a monitoring group said Friday in a new toll.

The raids struck Al-Bab and Qbasin Thursday in the northern province of Aleppo, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground.

Previously the toll had stood at 37 dead.

"At least 52 civilians, including seven children, three teenagers and two women, were killed in the Syrian army air raids," said the Observatory, adding that dozens were seriously wounded.

The regime air force has killed thousands of people since it was first deployed in the war in July 2012.

Activists accuse the government of killing more civilians than jihadists in the raids.

The UN and international rights groups have repeatedly called on the government to refrain from using its air force against inhabited areas.

The country´s multi-sided civil war has killed an estimated 200,000 people and displaced half of its population.
